Born and raised in Mexico City, Dr. Martinez del Campo discovered his passion for medicine at an early age, inspired by a family of physicians and by the profound impact that compassionate care can have on a patient’s life. The grandson of doctors, he grew up surrounded by stories of healing, science, and service, influences that shaped his lifelong commitment to medicine.
Dr. Martinez del Campo earned his medical degree from Anahuac University in Mexico City, graduating top of his class with honors with an Academic Excellence Scholarship. During medical school, he was one of only two students selected out of 200 for a rotation at the University of Miami’s William J. Harrington Program, where he spent four transformative months training in neurosurgery under world-renowned neurosurgeons. That experience sparked a deep fascination with the human brain and confirmed his calling to neurosurgery.
Following medical school, he dedicated himself to community medicine and volunteer work, providing care to underserved populations throughout rural Mexico. Soon after, he began working alongside a US-trained neurosurgeon, further solidifying his desire to pursue advanced training in the United States.
Dr. Martinez del Campo went on to complete a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked closely with some of the most influential figures in modern neurosurgery. He subsequently completed his neurosurgical residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, one of the nation’s most rapidly growing academic programs. There, his focus on brain tumors and skull base surgery became central to his practice, performing over 700 complex cranial cases during his senior years of training. He then pursued a dedicated skull base and brain tumor fellowship at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle, gaining advanced expertise in both open and minimally invasive skull base surgery.
Today, as the founder and Medical Director of the Neurosurgical Institute of the Valley in Edinburg, Texas, Dr. Martinez del Campo has brought world-class skull base and brain tumor care to the Rio Grande Valley, a region where such specialized services were previously unavailable. The multidisciplinary team that integrates neurosurgery with neurology, oncology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, and other specialties ensure every patient receives comprehensive, individualized care.
During his research years and residency, Dr. Martinez del Campo published roughly 30 peer-reviewed papers with over 700 citations, and has delivered numerous oral presentations in neurosurgical research. He remains engaged in research, currently working with local leaders in performing epidemiological studies in the Rio Grande Valley.
Providing care in English, Spanish and French, Dr. Martinez del Campo combines academic excellence with a deep sense of humanity, offering patients not only the most advanced neurosurgical techniques and technology but also empathy, honesty, and personal connection throughout their journey.
